The Passion Project for careers was designed to let students study something they're passionate about while learning new things about themselves. Although the obvious aim of this project is to learn to succeed in a certain field, success was not always the outcome. Some people chose to do future careers of interest, some chose to learn musical instruments, and some chose to truly follow a unique passion of theirs. I chose to learn how to write a short story.
I chose to do this because ever since the first grade I have loved to write. I used to write little stories about dinosaurs and alien planets and other childish things. What I did to start this off was I went to different web sites to search up different short story authors. I came up between two different authors; Edgar Allan Poe and Chuck Palahniuk. After careful consideration I ruled out Poe due to the fact I couldn't understand anything he wrote. But I did decide to go after Chuck's writing styles. I like how he uses short burst sentences to emphasize and quickly prove a point while giving lots more room for the story to unfold.
A couple road blocks I encountered were simple writing things such as writers block, brainstorming, and finally actually coming up with ideas to write about. At times the writers block was so bad that I would just end up deleting everything I had originally written down. The brainstorming was horrible. It was disorganized, random, and wasn't even helpful.
In the end I learned many different things about myself and writing. What I learned about myself is that I really have no talent in writing. I can never find the time or the mental drive to go and write for an hour or two every day. I don't have the orgizational skills that are needed to be able to successfully write a story, although, I do wish I did have those skills, because I did enjoy this project. What I learned about writing is that it may seem easy, but it's not. Writing is a task that takes a lot of time, hard work, and tons of focus.
Looking back, I have no regrets in choosing this subject. I really enjoyed the process in which writing takes place, and I wouldn't have chosen any other passion for my passion project
